Newstead Girls’ College Broadcasting Unit (NCBU) was formed in 2001 impressed by the participation in the Media Competitions held at Ananda College, Colombo in 2000.The Motto of NCBU was “AD ASTRA PER ASPERA” which means “Get Shine Through Stars”.

Ms. Ayona Wickramasinghe was the first President of the Newstead College Broadcasting Unit and Ms. Waruni Wickramasinghe was the first Secretary of the unit. Mrs. Sepalika Ranaweera was the Teacher-in-charge of the NCBU from the beginning to 2006. Teachers who served in the Broadcasting Unit were

From 2001-2006, the members of NCBU were able to be in the Top 10 of Ananda college Media Competitions. Remarkable achievements were as follows:

• 2000 – Nadishani Silva - 2nd Place - Sinhala Medium
• 2001 – WaruniWickramasinghe - 2nd Place - English Medium
• 2003 – WasanaSamarathunga - 1st Place - Sinhala Medium

From 2001-2006, the members of NCBU were able to conduct a Media Day annually. NCBU did Intra-chool Media Competitions in order to improve the media skills of the girls at early years and developed up to Inter-school Competitions in both Sinhala and English media in the following years. Experienced Media Personnel like Saman Athaudahetti, Aruna Krishantha of Lakhanda, Roshan Watawala who really helped NCBU in Workshops and training.Arun Dias Bandaranayake, Sampath Sri Wickramasinghe, Ms. Deepani from Lankadeepa joinedwith the NCBU to make the events successful.

Newstead Media Circle

It was became a golden era for the Media Unit of Newstead Girls’College in 2009. Tthe Newstead College Broadcasting Unit was newly formed again as Newstead Media Circlewith the same motto of “AD ASTRA PER ASPERA”. It was Mrs. Bimba Maheshi Weerasooriya who was very much instrumental in forming the Newstead Media Circle. She entrusted Mr. Ivan Kiriellawith the responsibility of the Media Circle making him the Teacher-charge. The first President of the Newstead Media Circle was ThaibaZakir.

In 2010, Newstead Media Circle commenced its mission with the following members.

In 2010,the members of Newstead Media Circle were able to hold the first Intra-school Media Competitions on 06th of June 2010, both in Sinhala and English media.

On 30th September 2010 Newstead Media Circle held its1st Media Day “PEHASARA - 2010”. The veteran poet & lyricistMr. Rathna Sri Wijesinghe was the Chief Guest at the Media Day. Mrs. SepalikaRanaweera was also invited as a guest in recognition of her service as the former Teacher-in-charge. Pehasara – 2010 became a great success with the contribution of teachers and all the members of the Newstead Media Circle.

At that time NathashaWijesinghe andChathuryaSamarapperuma were the President and Secretary respectively. At present Newstead Media Circle is walking towards the success with the Guidance of Mr. Ivan Kiriella, the Teacher-in-charge.GithmiMadaraJayawardene is the current President of the Newstead Media Circle.
